This popular furniture business was owned and operated by Mr Les Cheesley. In about 1963 the premises of Birrell's Bakery, Miss Hamilton's Corsetry, Gouge's Dry Cleaners, and the Dalgety NZ Loan Stock & Station Agents were demolished to make way for the Wodonga Home Furnishers. Mr Cheesley was a well-respected member of the community and served 13 years as a local councillor. He was often referred to as the council’s watchdog. His contribution is commemorated in the naming of the Les Cheesley Oval, Wodonga in his honour. Mr Cheesley died in Wodonga on 29th September 1994. This business was the first Cleaning Service operating in Wodonga, later branching out into cleaning supplies. The business was owned by Charles De Guara who had migrated to Australia from Malta at the age of 16. After various jobs in Melbourne, marriage to Latvian migrant Maija and three children, he and his family moved to Wodonga in 1971. He initially worked at the Wodonga Meat Works and soon became the union delegate, initiating strike action related to inaccurate practices in recording slaughtered animals which affected workers’ payments. This action successfully secured back pay for the workers. Mr De Guara started his cleaning enterprise in 1981 while still at the meatworks and then became full-time with cleaning in 1983. He set up his showrooms in the former Wodonga Library building in Hugh Street, Wodonga. The business employed up to 25 full and part-time workers with a turn over close to a million dollars annually. In addition to cleaning, Mr De Guara sold carpet cleaning machines and vacuum cleaners to individuals as well as businesses, hospitals and clubs. Due to changed family circumstances, the business closed in the late 1980s. Coffee Palaces were developed throughout Australia with the backing of the Temperance Movement as an alternative venue to pubs in the late 19th century. Two Coffee Palaces identified in Wodonga in the early days were the Railway Coffee Palace and the Wodonga Coffee Palace. In 1908 Wodonga Coffee Palace was advertised for sale, having 15 rooms, a 15 stall stable and feed-room. In 1921 Wodonga Coffee Palace was taken over by Julia Ronan who had successfully conducted the dining rooms at the Wodonga Sale-yards for 15 years. The building of the Hume Weir was in progress and many of the workers boarded at the Coffee Palace. In 1936 Wodonga Coffee Palace became “Glenburnie” Guest House. Mr. Loftus Henry Moran, born in Winchelsea, Victoria, was well-known in the tea trade, originally working with Griffiths Bros Ltd. He started his own business, Loftus Moran Pty Ltd in 1909. Loftus Moran's company imported chinaware from Britain and sold it into the Australian market. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006. Paragon, trading at various times as Lancom Paragon, Moore Paragon, Paragon Printing and the South Pacific Print Group, was also based in Wodonga from 1958 until 2010. It began as Lamson Paragon in 1958 but was destroyed by a fire causing £150,000 damage. The factory resumed operations on 24 June 1959.with 30 staff and by 1973 employed 120 and used 80 tons of paper per week. Further develp[ment took place to the factory in 2 stages. In 1977 Moore Corporation of Toronto took over control of the London based parent company Lamson Paragon necessitating a change of name of the Australian company to become Moore Business Systems Australia Limited. After many successful years of operation including expansion to a staff of 240 people, changes to business operations and the loss of several large contracts led to the company entering voluntary administration in March 2010.This machine and docket has local provenance as it came from the 20th century business of J. Mann & Son in Wodonga..The machine was manufactured by Paragon, also operating as Lamcon Paragon and Moore Paragon, which were a major manufacturer in Wodonga from 1958 until 2010.This is a grey rectangular-shaped metal box with rounded edges. The box has four metal studs on the base to keep the box stable. The box has a hinged section to enable paper dockets to be inserted. It also has a turning mechanism for removing the dockets, one at a time from a slot at the top of the machine. The machine includes a docket from Mann Mitre 10 Wodonga operated by J. Mann & Son Pty. Ltd. The dockets provided a duplicate copy for the company as well as the white copy for the customer. Eric Holloway began spot milling timber at age of 17. He borrowed fifty pound from an uncle in 1934 to purchase a McCormick Deering tractor and saw bench. He went from farm to farm cutting timber for farmers. For a time, he worked on Shelley Station spot milling with WS Walker and Son. In approximately 1946 Arthur and Eric Holloway established a saw mill at Shelley. Another brother Ernie, a builder and returned soldier, worked with them from time to time. Using timber sawn in the mill he built eight basic houses for the mill workers. The brothers employed many migrants: - Yugoslav, Czechs, Russians, Ukrainians, Serbs as well as other hardworking people. This meant there were families, so Ernie also built and furnished a school at Shelley. Application was made for a teacher from the Education Department. At the Shelley mill the workers used ex-army blitzes, GM trucks (for carting logs) army ducks and a centurion tank for parts. The timber from the mill was trucked to Albury and Wodonga, customers being FA Stowe and Mates Timber. The army was also a big customer with Holloways supplying timber for the army huts that were built at Bandiana. A timber mill that had been built at Tallangatta by State Rivers and Water for the purpose of establishing New Tallangatta, was purchased by Holloway Brothers as an extension of their Shelley operation. In 1954 a new mill was built at Granite Flat on the Omeo Highway and the Shelley operation closed. Ernie Holloway was involved in the building of the mill and accommodation houses in Mitta Mitta. The mill workers travelled from Mitta to work each day. Holloways Building Supplies was established at 49 Tallangatta Rd Wodonga at this time. It was established on four house blocks with a little shed, with more land being acquired as the operation expanded. The brothers realized that it would be more profitable to set up their own timber outlet to supply their customers. Arthur Holloway continued to run the sawmills while Eric Holloway concentrated on the Wodonga business. A hardware store, offices and joinery were built as demand continued for building materials. All the timber arriving in the yard from the mill was hand sorted, providing employment for many. With the milling and timber outlets Holloways provided employment for approximately forty staff. The next generation of the Holloway family became involved. A Hyster forklift was purchased which allowed for bulk handling of the timber. Land was purchased in Sanyo Drive where timber was cleated and dried. Select grade timber, F17 dry framing, builders hardware and tools were sold. Holloways endeavoured to be a one stop shop for framing and fitting out of houses. In 1989 the business was sold to Mt Beauty Timbers who later on sold to Dahlsens. The timber mill was decommissioned. The Holloway family retained the ownership of the premises of 49 Thomas Mitchell Drive leasing to Dahlsens until that operation was moved to Albury in 2013. In 2014 the lease land was sold to two local businesses. Leigh Martin Marine purchased the parcel of land adjoining their business. Lester and Son purchased the remaining block and demolished the premises. Patrick Toole was born in Corowa on 7 September 1913. In the early 1930s the family moved to Wodonga. Pat became an apprentice mechanic with Bill Dobbie and became a partner in 1936. Patrick Toole took over business in his own right on 23 August 1939. Toole’s Motors also ran a car and truck agency, a towing and crane depot, as well as a small disposal section. After breaking his leg in 1963, Pat extended the disposals business and by 1965 it was running as Wodonga Disposals and later, Toole’s Disposals. At their peak Toole’s employed 70 people across their various businesses including the garage, wreckers, towing businesses, a storage shed at Bandiana and the Disposal Store. Pat died in Wodonga on 10 November 1976 and the Disposals Store was taken over by his twin sons, Frank and Bill. His other sons, Pat and Jim ran the North Eastern Truck Wreckers. Tooles Disposals acquired most of their stock from Government auctions and also became licensed second hand dealers. They sold a wide range of military and non-military equipment from clothing to footwear and equipment for cooking and camping. They also shipped scrap metal to Japan and sourced uniforms and other items from Japan and East European countries. The business continued on the corner of High Street and Stanley Street for over 70 years, but the Toole family decided to sell the building in 2009. The building was eventually sold to a local business consortium in 2010. Toole’s continued to operate until May 2011. Thee building was demolished in 2013. After the death of her husband, Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus Hotel. She later married John Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until 1893 when the license was transferred to William Carkeek. Carkeeks owned the hotel from 1900 - 1903 and again from 1906 - 1909. The Terminus Hotel, Wodonga was built by James Thompson Hatch in 1873, the same year the railway reached Wodonga from Melbourne. It was named due to its close proximity to the railway terminus. It was sold to Messrs George Day and Kenneth McLennan of Albury. It was first licenced to J.G. Morton in January 1874. Annie Allen, from Ireland, took over as licensee of the hotel containing 14 rooms in 1879, after she and her husband, George James Allen, purchased it. In 1887 they added a new wing on the south boundary of the property next to Peter McLean’s store at 81 Sydney Road. The architects for the new wing were Gordon and Gordon. A billiard room, a dining room, and 18 other rooms were added on the vacant block of land between the Hotel and the Bank of Victoria. A balcony 6 feet wide was added on the north side. Included in the plans was the latest patent elevator, later known as a dumb waiter. Allen died in 1889 aged 52, and Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus. She later married John G. Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until December 1898 when the licence was transferred to William Carkeek. Carkeek, from Cornwall, arrived in the colony around 1860 and is considered one of the founders of Tallangatta. In November 1903, the license was transferred to Daniel Crawford, then in 1906 it was transferred to Mr Stephen Carkeek. In 1916 it passed into the hands of Mr H. W. Allen of Rutherglen, son of Mr George James Allen. On 1st June 1998 the Terminus Hotel was destroyed by fire. Estimates of damage range from between a conservative $750,000 to as high as $2 million. The remains of the building were demolished in 1999.The Terminus Hotel was one of the earliest hotels in Wodonga with clear links to the establishment of the railway line. Norman Thomas Henshaw operated a tailor's business in High Street, Wodonga for several years. He was born in Albury in 1891, the sone of WIlliam Henshaw and Ellen nee Goldsworthy. At various times, Norman operated a tailor business in Albury, Rutherglen, Beechworth and Wodonga. His business in High Street, Wodonga was advertised as being located opposite the Fire Brigade Hall. Mr. Henshaw died 10 September 1966 and his wife Agnes died on 30 July 1999, aged 107. They are buried in the Waugh Rd. cemetery in Albury, NSWThis item has local significance as it represents business which operated in Wodonga in the 1920s. This bottle was used as a form of advertising for the Wodonga Business of Samuel Mason. Samuel Mason was born at Bethnal Green, a suburb of London in 1824. He came to Australia via California, landing in Sydney in 1847. After a return to the California goldfields Samuel returned to Australia, arriving in Albury, NSW in 1855. He opened a bakery in Albury, and also commenced the manufacture of ginger beer for which he gained a reputation across Australia. Mr Mason continued in business in Albury for some time, but he established himself in Wodonga c1857, continuing a branch business in Albury. Twice a month in the early days Mr Mason walked to Beechworth for the purpose of transacting business. Occasionally he was summoned to attend the Beechworth courts as a juror. In 1901 Mr Mason retired from business, handing over the reins to his only son, Mr Samuel Mason Jr. who continued the aerated water business for some years. In about 1920 the business changed hands, being take over by E. Bartel. Samuel Mason Sr. died on 6 April 1908 and is buried in Wodonga. Mr. Mason Jr. was a prominent townsman. For some years he was a councillor of the Town Riding of the Wodonga Shire Council. He was also the first chairman of the Wodonga Water Trust in 1908. Samuel Mason Jr. moved to Melbourne in March 1920, primarily due to failing health. He died on 6 February 1929 and was interred in Melbourne.This bottle has strong local significance as it is representative of one of the earliest businesses established in Wodonga in the 1850s which operated until c1920. The business continued after 1920 under different ownership and names.2 earthenware pottery bottles manufactured by Bendigo Pottery and imprinted with the business brand of S. Mason, Wodonga. One bottle still contains a marble as part of the Codd sealing system to prevent gas from the ginger beer seeping out and the drink going flat. The bottles Within two elliptical circles are painted (in freehand) "S. MASON" in the top half and "WODONGA" in the bottom half. These are separated by an asterisk on both sides. A large "S" overlaid by a similarly large "M" is within the inner circle. 2nd bottle also includes "BREWED GINGER BEER" above the brand. Born in Chiltern in 1875, John T McSwiney moved into his premises in High Street, Wodonga in 1901. He operated his pharmacy from this site for over 64 years. At its peak, John put the Wodonga store under the care of a manager and moved to set up a second pharmacy in Wangaratta. He later returned to his Wodonga pharmacy where although semi-retired John continued to go to work each day up to his 90th birthday. Businesses include a barber, dry cleaners and Dalgety-N.Z.L. Dalgety and Company Limited merged in November 1961 with New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited, one of its principal competitors in Australia's eastern states and New Zealand. As of 30 June 1970, the business name Dalgety New Zealand Loan was delisted, with the company becoming Dalgety Limited. This information dates the photo as being taken between 1961 and June 1970. This site later became Wodonga Home Furnishers. Peard & Sons Plumbing on the corner of Lawrence and High, Roy Benson's store and Woolworths Food-Fair. Peards were located here in the 1940s. By November 1966 to C. 1973 this building was occupied by Tower Tyre Service, followed by Repco Auto Parts until 1985. It is now Lee Corner Chinese restaurant. Roy Benson was listed as a Grocer in the telephone directory, but he apparently had a few tables and chairs and was also a milk bar/café. He was heavily involved in the community including committee roles in Wodonga Dramatic Club, Wodonga & District Progress Association, Wodonga Carpet Bowls Association, Wodonga Chamber of Commerce and Wodonga Shire Council. It was owned by the Costa family for many years, then taken over by Josephine Adams Bernardo Costa was born in Switzerland in 1829 and left his homeland for Sydney at the age of 27. He ventured south to the gold fields of Beechworth and Yackandandah. He moved to 1891. Bernardo applied for and was granted a wine licence on 24/14/1887 and established his Wine Saloon. After his death in 1915, the Wine Café continued to be operated by his daughters Annie, Angela and Gertrude. They also operated a boarding house behind the café. The business operated under a range of owners for approximately 72 years, closing in about 1963. It was estimated that hundreds of thousands of gallons of wines of all kinds were sold there. It is now the location of Gateway Health and other allied Health Services. In 1906 Patrick Mylon started a passenger transport service in the Albury-Wodonga border area with horses and cabs. His son Jack went into business in the late 1920s, and his grandson Bernie joined the firm early in 1970. When Patrick started with the horses and cabs, each cab carried eight passengers and he always had two horses per cab. As the business expanded, Mylons used a range of buses and coaches including Reo, Chev and Bedford vehicles. During more than 100 years if service to the Wodonga region and beyond, Mylon Motorways received many awards for Excellence and tourism. Hall’s Modern Bakery was established in 1930 and was selling Sunicrust Bread. The bakery operated for 48 years. In 1960, Bob Hall and four Albury bakers, Eric Wynne and Allan, Neville and Keith Thiel, joined Bunge’s Albury Flour Mills in forming a new company, Southern Border Bakeries. He became a director and general manager of the company. He also served 9 years in local government. Bob was also a member of the Bread Manufacturers Council of N.S.W., the Australian and New Zealand Bread Manufacturers Association, and an employers representative on the N.S.W. The building was constructed in 1890. Dr. Grant Sr.'s Surgery was in the house on the left. These were Wodonga’s second shire offices. The Wodonga Council operated from these chambers from 1890 until 1957 when they moved to Woodland Grove building. The Gas Company then took over the old Shire Hall. The entrance to the Melba Theatre is on the far right. The Melba Theatre screened its last film in 1968. It was originally the premises of the Federal Coach Factory, then Buntz's Garage, and became Mylon's Garage. July 1960 saw it open as Wodonga Market. An article in Wodonga and District Express dated 1 July 1960 announced: “Wodonga’s New Market Open Today” Arcade Style Shopping "Wodonga’s new market will be open as from morning trade today. Modelled on current overseas open marketing ideas, the new business is similar to the Albury Market in David Street. The Manager (Mr. Ned Day) said yesterday that shops and stalls were sub-let to tenants for a “co-operative rent” which enabled the market to pass these advantages on to the people in lower prices. The building would lend itself to the arcade style which made attractive presentation and would also assist the customer to make quick purchases. There was over 5000 square feet of shopping space.” Businesses open that day were Gerecke’s with a display of secondhand furniture and fittings, and a poultry mart to open the following Friday. Also Webster’s Fruit and Vegetables. Mr. Ned Day advertised space for a variety of listed business types. Businesses recognised in the photo include a Butcher, Webster's Fruit & Vegies, Bill Dunstan's Boat Centre. Snack Bar/Fish & Chips/Milk Bar Auction Mart, New & Used Furniture.
