Doily was hand made by Riuth Woodward who was the daughter of Alan Richardson, a sawmiller at Tabbara. He held ticket for the paddlesteamer Curlip.This item represents an important pastime of Australian women of the late 19th to mid 20th century. Women's focus was the home and its decoration was important. A special luncheon was held for 61 World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. 1993 was Legacy's 70th Anniversary and the luncheon followed the WWI meeting on Thursday 12th August. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and Alan Woodward (seen in the Answer newsletter article with his mother Myrtle). Ron Austin, a World War 1 veteran spoke to entertain the ladies.The photos include George Woodward adding a moustache on another legatee. See also 00908 for black and white photos of the same day. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. 00577.1 shows a school girl kneeling by the wreath inside the Shrine. 00577.2 is the choir on the steps of the Shrine. 00577.3 is President George Woodward at the podium. 00577.4 is the official party including the Governor of Victoria, The Hon Richard McGarvie and his wife. 00577.5 is the audience seated facing the Shrine. 00577.6 is the Governor and President Woodward leading the wreath layers up the steps of the Shrine. 00577.7 shows school students with wreaths and a bag pipe player walking up the steps. Original design by Dorothy Leviny, aged 25, while she was a student at the Bendigo School Of Mines under the tutelage of Arthur T. Woodward. Woodward, who had come to Australia from Britain, was a renowned proponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Australia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dorothy Leviny, along with two of her sisters, entered a number of items in the First Australian Exhibition of Women's Work, Melbourne, 1907, and was awarded second prize for one of her wallpaper designs. Dorothy Leviny was the ninth child born to noted colonial silversmith and jeweller, Ernest Leviny, and his wife, Bertha (nee Hudson).This original wallpaper design by Dorothy Leviny is one of few that remain in existence from the early twentieth century showing the influence of the British Arts and Crafts Movement in Australia.Original wallpaper design made by (Bertha) Dorothy Leviny painted in watercolour. Photos of a trip to an Aircraft Museum, including Legatees George Woodward and George Standish. With about 12 Legatees and some wives it is assumed to be a day trip to the museum. On the shape of the building it looks like the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Philip Island, or perhaps the Australian National Aviation Museum, in Moorabbin. Also present were L/ John Sullivan, L/ Joe Morton and his wife Mary Morton. The captions included: "Legatee Joe Morton, joined by his wife, Mary. Two photos of the finals of the Junior Plain English Speaking contest and President George Woodward with the finalists. One photo shows the Bendigo preliminary round with the winner Kate, she is seen in the group of finalist photo with George Woodward. The date is assumed to be 1994 as that was the year George Woodward was president. From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the State, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. On its round body, there are some slitsM60 machine gun flash eliminator This flash eliminator form a 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, M60 machine gun was hit by a Viet Cong bullet on 6 November 1965 during Operation Hump north of Bien Hoa. the bent metal on the eliminator can be clearly seen. The round fragmented on impacy, wounding both the gunner, Private Anthony John McIvor from Richmond, NSW and the gun No.2 , Private Glen Brett Woodward from Brisbane, Quensland. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. Held in December each year. The Band playing was the RAAF Central Band. Part of the event was the welcoming of the incoming President of Legacy. In 1993 President John Stevenson welcomed Allan Quayle.
