Functional object - Tin Mug and Lid
This tin mug with a lid was commonly used in military, camping, and worksite settings during the 19th and 20th centuries. The lid helped retain heat and prevent dust or debris from entering the mug, making it practical for outdoor use. Similar designs were widely issued in soldier’s kits, railway workers’ gear, and camping equipment. The sturdy wire handle allowed for easy carrying or hanging over an open fire to heat liquids. The visible rusting and aged patina suggest this item dates from the early to mid-20th century. This is a metal tin mug with a matching lid, designed for drinking liquids or heating beverages over an open flame. The mug has a cylindrical shape with a slightly tapered base. The handle is made of twisted metal wire, looped into a sturdy shape for easy gripping. The lid is circular and features a small metal ring handle for easy removal. The surface shows visible rust, patina, and signs of wear, indicating age and extensive use.mug, cup, camping, stockman, fire, outdoor, railway employee, soldiers kit, military, worksite -

Plan - Great Extended Hustlers, April, 2014
Seven men were killed at the Great Extended Hustler's mine disaster on 2nd May 1914 by an explosion of dynamite occurring as the men were waiting at the plat to ascend the mine at the end of their shift. No blame was attached to anyone in the findings of the inquisition. It was unknown what caused the dynamite to explode. This document formed part of the research done at the time by Bendigo Historical Society, of the 100 years commemoration of the mine disaster, held at Hustler's Hill in 2014. One page plan, computer generated, annotated to show the worksite of the miners prior to when the explosion occurred at the Great Extended Hustlers mine in May 1914. The location of Martin, Ryan, Thomas, Campbell, Blair and Chinn are described. great extended hustlers, goldmining, accident, 1914 -

Functional object - Thermos
This thermos was designed to keep liquids hot or cold for extended periods. Such thermoses were commonly used for outdoor activities like camping, farming, school lunches, and worksite meals. The design suggests it could be from the mid-20th century, possibly the 1940s–1960s. These were popular among labourers, travellers, and schoolchildren for carrying tea, coffee, or soup.A cylindrical, silver-colored metal thermos, possibly made of aluminum or stainless steel. The thermos is composed of two sections, with a visible seam in the middle, suggesting it unscrews to open. It has three raised bands along the body, adding structural reinforcement. A metal lid is secured at one end, likely serving as a cup.thermos, drink, liquid, household item, camping, travelling -

Photograph - Black and White - demolishing cable tram track Swanston St 1925-1926
The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. There are at least three similar photos in the PROV Collection.Yields information about the extent of work need to quickly convert the Swanston Street cable tram track to electric trams in about a month.Photograph - Black and White of the demolition of the cable tram track in Swanston St near Bourke St 1925-1926trams, tramways, cable trams, workmen, mmtb, swanston street, demolition, track work, air compressor, royal hotel arcade, conversion -

The photograph shows Ivy May Child standing with her father Ted Child at the Silvan Dam worksite. The construction of Silvan Dam took place between 1926 and the 1932 opening. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Photograph - Changing the Location of the Essendon Airport terminus, Ron Scholten, 7-10-1976
The original line to the Essendon Aerodrome was constructed in 1943 to serve the airport and aircraft construction. It was funded by the Commonwealth Government. By 1976, patronage to the airport terminus in Vaughan St had dropped, the crossing of the highway to the Tullamarine Airport opened in 1970, was dangerous, and the highway needed to be widened. The new terminus was a short distance to the north between Mathews Ave and the Highway. This series of photographs show the operation of a tram service during the changeover. Trams ran from the Niddrie crossover near Keilor Road to a temporary terminus just short of the worksite, with cars running "bang" road or the wrong way for one trip along either line. This would have been controlled by an Inspector at the Niddrie end. The work was done over a 7-hour period, including changing the overhead over. Work would have been completed after the changeover period. .1 - W5 800 at “temporary” Essendon Airport terminus, Cnr Mathews Ave, Vaughan St. after running “bang” road or the wrong way to this point from the Niddrie or Keilor Road crossover.
