The blue forage cap (frequently referred to as a side cap, wedge cap, or garrison cap) during World War II was a practical, foldable soft cap widely adopted by air forces and naval units, most notably by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Commonwealth aircrews. In bomber and fighter squadrons, a well-worn, battered forage cap became an informal badge of honor, distinguishing seasoned veterans from new arrivals ("sprogs").A navy blue woolen WW11 Officer's Forage Cap with shaped folded sides. This cap would have been worn by a student nurse in her third year of training as in the first year her cap had no arrows. Prior to the transfer of nursing education to the university sector, nurses were trained in a course of instruction in hospital nursing schools that awarded a certificate in general nursing. These courses were generally for a three-year period, and nurses were paid employees of the parent hospital. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made all of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. Her father served in Civil Defence during the war. Marjorie was in Birmingham during the war and remembered sheltering with her young daughter, Anne (Quaadgras) in the air raid shelter during bombing.
