This postcard is part of an album of postcards which date from late 19th century to mid 20th century. Bear's Castle is a unique and historical building constructed in the 1840s and classified by the National Trust for its design and construction techniques. The purpose of the 'castle' is contested but one theory is that it was built as a defensive citadel against attacks by bushrangers which had occurred prior to the owner, John Bear, ordering its construction. This postcard is in an album of postcards dating from the late 19th century to mid 20th century. It reflects the popularity of collecting postcards in Australia which reached a height in the early 1900s until around 1920. “This old farmhouse on the east of Ridge Road, has now disappeared. A particularly fine spell of clear frosty June days, prompted a number of early morning "frost" paintings in Mernda and districts. The painting owes something to tonal impressionism. At the time I had been elected a member of the "20 Melbourne Painters", (a rather conservative body of tonal artists) from which I later resigned. However, the importance of tonal values and the decisive balance of light and dark tones cannot be dismissed in painting. By painting into the light, the tonal qualities of a picture can often be more decisively understood and expressed. In this instance the sparkle of white paper and the deeper tones of the massed foliage contribute to the light effect. Such paintings are made for one's own enjoyment and are a spontaneous reaction to an effect that moves one to do something about it.” John BorrackPart of the John and Gillian Borrack Federation Bequest, donated to the City of Whittlesea in December 2001 by Gillian and John BorrackJohn Borrack '79. On the 20th December 1853 Lieut Governor Charles LaTrobe took his spade to turn the first sod of an embankment across the swampy bed of the Plenty River at a lonely place called Yan Yean, in order to create Melbourne’s first water supply. In the early 1850’s water had been drawn from the Yarra which even then was known as Yarra Soup. A convict by the name of James Blackburn produced the basic design for supplying water to Melbourne from a reservoir on the Plenty River at Yan Yean, and later on he was appointed consulting engineer on the project. In 1853 a contract was let for the building of the wall for 91 thousand 575 pounds, and at one stage some 400 labourers were at work in the area. A tramway was constructed to convey stone and other materials from Melbourne. So famous was this magnificent stretch of water that illustrations of the bluestone embankment and tower appeared in London journals Whittlesea Historical Society – Historic items for Diamond Valley Community Radio September 1990 Colour photographyan yean, yan yean reservoir
