This writing desk was presented to a member of the Young Mens Literary and Scientific Society, based in Williamstown. These societies were community and educational organisations fostering self improvement and were active in the late 19th to early 20th centuries in Australia and other countries. They offered access to libraries and literary and scientific forums for working and middle class men, and were often linked to churches. The Williamstown society was very active around the turn of the century offering lectures, meetings and debates. Wooden vintage writing case or desk.
