Historical information

Young mens literary and scientific societies were community and educational organisations fostering self improvement and were active in the late 19th to early 20th centuries in Australia and other countries. They offered access to libraries and literary / scientific forums for working and middle class men, and were often linked to churches. The Williamstown society was very active around the turn of the century offering lectures, meetings and debates.

Physical description

Wooden vintage writing case. Two slanted top opening doors; keyhole on R/H door damaged (no key). Metal badge on each door (see "inscriptions and markings" below}. Day/date/month display operated by bakelite knobs above display. Four tier holders for stationery/letters etc. Storage for writing implements and pen nibs. Netting arrangement on back of L/H door.

On metal badge affixed to L/H desktop door: "PRESENTED to Mr. A. Willlian AS A TOKEN of ESTEEM By the Members of W. L.&.S. A./ Jan. 1. 1888" (Williamstown Literary & Scientific Association)
On metal badge affixed to R/H desktop door: "WILLIAMSTOWN YOUNG MENS LITERACY & SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATION" surrounding the insignia
