John Ferrier was employed on the farm of the Sundermans. In July 1900 he shot Alice Aubrey, sister of Mrs Sunderman, at Dawson near Heyfield. She was shot in the back whilst hanging out the washing. Defence was temporary insanity which was hereditary in his family. He was found guilty and sentenced to death which was commuted to life imprisonment
