Textile - Woollen Jacket, Victoria Police, Commonwealth Woollen Mills, 1947-1969

Historical information

Following World War II, Victoria Police began shifting away from British 'bobby' style uniforms. In 1947, a new uniform was introduced featuring navy blue woollen, durable materials.

This jacket was woven and made at the Commonwealth Woollen Mill and Clothing Factory, Geelong.

Physical description

Navy blue worsted wool tunic-style policeman's jacket with four silver coloured buttons down centre front, stamped 'police-force Victoria'. Jacket has four stitched on pockets, with buttons, on front, an attached belt and is lined with blue material. A gold braid insignia has been hand sewn on the arms and epaulettes with buttons, on the shoulder.
