Photograph, Cantades, summer evening Ithaca

Historical information

The group is pictured in Ithaca enjoying a summer evening of music and outdoor dining. The first musician on the left is Dimitris Kouvaras, an accomplished guitarist. The musicians were most likely playing 'cantades' which are romantic serenades with male voices accompanied by guitars associated in the Ionian islands. This distinctive style of Ionian music is considered to be influenced by the long period of Venetian rule of the islands.
