Six Aboriginal reserves were established during the 1860s. These were under the control of the Board for the Protection of Aborigines. Four were Christian missions receiving government aid. These were Lake Tyers (Anglican) and Ramahyuck (Presbyterian/Moravian) in eastern Victoria for the Gunai/Kurnai clans; Ebenezer (Moravian) in north-west Victoria for the clans of the Wimmera and Lower Murray; and Lake Condah (Anglican) in south-west Victoria. The other two were secular government controlled reserves: Framlingham which, like Lake Condah, was established for the Mara-speaking Gunditjmara and Kirrae-wurrung people of south-west Victoria; and Coranderrk, located about 60 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, for the Kulin clans of central Victoria. ‘The subject of this illustration is situated in one of the wildest and most romantic places in the Gipps Land ranges, about midway between Mount Munday and Mount Juliet. The foliage in this locality is very luxuriant, comprising mostly Fern Trees which are interwoven with various descriptions of grasses and stunted Fern leaves. Beneath this mass of vegetation flows a branch of the Contentment Creek.’

Printed inscription on reverse: A fifty-mile drive from Melbourne, via Lilydale, will bring the traveller to the township of Fernshawe. On nearing the entrance to the town, the scenery becomes most enchanting. In the distance can be seen the summit of Mount Munday. The ridge of trees in the middleground forms part of the foot of the Black Spur. The building in the foreground is the residence of the only Government Official, who represents the various titles of Post-master, State School Teacher, Registrar, &c.

Previous to its erection, the only means of crossing over to the township was across the fallen trees, which are of prodigious dimensions. The River, as may be seen, is very rapid, and, though shallow, it contains a great quantity of fish of a somewhat moderate size.’

In some places the River winds its way through flat open country, with scarcely a shrub on its banks; and in others the scenery is of the wildest description. Inscription on reverse: 'Fern Bridge Gully is situated near the summit of the Black Spur, about two miles from Fernshawe. Here the foliage is exceedingly dense, so much so as to exclude daylight in many places. This stream has derived its name from the fact of the Bridge having been constructed of large massive fern tree. The stream which flows beneath the Bridge is one of the sources of the River Watt.’

On reverse: ‘The scene this illustration presents is but one of the many that exist along the course of this shallow River, which, like its parent the Campaspe, abounds with rocky and romantic scenery. The fall of the River at this place is over one hundred feet, but is broken by a long course of rocks to the lower bed; the actual fall as seen is about forty feet. The Coliban, though only a branch of the Campaspe, derives its name from the fact that its course runs through the Coliban Park. Gold is found in considerable quantities along the banks and in the stream, but at the present time these diggings are worked only by Chinamen.’

On Reverse: 'The present illustration represents a scene on the River Watt, and is situated in the valley between Mount Juliet and Mount Monda. The immediate neighbourhood abounds with scenery of the wildest and most romantic character. The River here is as clear as crystal, owing, no doubt, to its bed being composed of rock and pebbles. The banks on either side are studded with foliage so dense as to render access to the neighbourhood almost impracticable.’

On Reverse: 'Moon’s Range is situated to the right of the portion of the Dandenong Range of Mountains called “Fern Tree Gully.” This Range is notable for its almost impenetrable forest of trees, the majority of them being of gigantic growth. Numerous splitters and wood-cutters obtain lucrative employment in the production of laths and firewood. Near the summit of the range are several summer residences belonging to Melbourne merchants.’

On Reverse: ‘The present illustration is characteristic of a Squatter’s Station in Victoria, and is situated near Elphinstone. In the centre of the picture may be seen the Squatter’s residence or head-quarters surrounded by sheds and out-houses, and in the foreground is a flock of sheep in charge of a lad. Of late years it has become the practice to erect fences around the Australian Sheep Stations, which necessitates only the services of a boundary rider, and dispenses with those of a number of shepherds.’

On Reverse" ‘Sailor’s Creek as situated in the Jim Crow Ranges, which Range forms a portion of the Great Dividing Range of Mountains in Victoria. These hills contain many romantic spots. The one which forms the subject of the present illustration is a view of the Bridge which spans the Creek. Gold has been found throughout the course of the bed of this Creek in payable quantities. The diggers, as may be seen in the photograph, have constructed sluices in the side of the embankment for the purpose of washing the fine gold contained in the wash-dirt.’

The most remarkable and interesting part of this Mountain is its Crater, which, from its immense size and great depth, denotes that a volcanic eruption of considerable magnitude must have taken place at some period in the past. On Reverse: ‘This romantic Township is situated near Stringer’s Creek in Gipps Land, not far from the celebrated Baw-Baw Mountains. The Long Tunnel Gold Claim has proved a great source of wealth to this small out-of-the-way place, yielding sometimes between 2,000 and 3,000 ounces of gold per month. The population, which is mostly a mining one, reaches nearly 2,000 inhabitants, and are scattered about among the creeks and gullies of the neighbourhood. Until recently, the road traffic was limited to pack-horses, in consequence of the precipitous hills which surround the Town.‘

The grassy slope in the foreground of the picture is a portion of the North-West or Lower Lawn. These Gardens are under the management of Mr. Guilfoyle, with about 20 assistant botanists, florists, and general gardeners.’

On Reverse: ‘The Buchan River is a tributary of the great Snowy River, which extends itself from Port Ricardo, on the Gipps Land coast, to considerably beyond Mt. Kosciusko, in New South Wales. It is comparatively but a stream, but, like most of the smaller rivers in Victoria, it contains some beautiful scenery, peculiar to itself. Our present illustration is characteristic of its scenery, and is taken from a creek close to the River.’

On Reverse: ‘The Carlton Gardens are not so extensive as most of the other public gardens around Melbourne, and, being laid out on a flat piece of ground, have not the advantage of possessing much that is romantic in its scenery. The subject of this issue is the only interesting spot within the enclosure, which is the Rustic Fountain, surrounded by a small lake of water, on the banks of which grow some very beautiful specimens of the hanging willow. These Gardens are open to the public at all times.’

On Reverse: ‘This scene is taken from the banks of the Buckland River, which is about five miles distant from the Buffalo Mountains, as seen in the distance. These mountains are frequently covered with snow, in consequence of their great altitude. The Buckland River is a small tributary of the Ovens River, which flows through the Beechworth district, and eventually finds its way to the River Murray. The Bridge which is seen on the right of the picture forms the roadway which leads from the Buckland Camp to the Township of Bright.’

It is a remarkable fact that the hilly side of the River is covered with a mass of foliage of various descriptions, from the stately gum tree to the stunted wattle, whilst the opposite side of flat country has scarcely a shrub to be seen any where.’

On Reverse: ‘Jebb’s Pool is situated about four miles from the township of Lorne, and is so called in consequence of a gentleman named Jebb, whilst crossing the cataract, having fallen in and was swept down by the current into a whirlpool which is continually in motion, owing to the particular formation of the river and the powerful current of water. The depth of water in the pool must be considerable, as but for the timely assistance rendered his life would have been sacrificed.’

On Reverse: ‘The River Erskine, which empties itself into Loutitt Bay, is noted for the grandeur of its scenery. Its sources, owing to the impenetrability of the bush and the mountainous nature of the country, are unknown. They may eventually be traced a long way into the Cape Otway Ranges. An idea of the difficulty with which the present very beautiful illustration was obtained may be gained from the fact that it took our assistants, several days to convey the apparatus a distance of six miles and back. The depth of the fall is 150 feet. The foliage as seen comprises the very rare staghorn tree, the myrtle, the dogwood tree, and ferns.’

On Reverse: ‘Sylvan Dell is one of the favourite resorts for visitors who are in search of the romantic. The peculiarly slender and upright foliage which is seen near the foreground is that of the myrtle tree. Dogwood, brush, staghorn, ferns, and wattle make up the background. Considerable difficulty is experienced in reaching the Dell, in consequence of the precipitous hills and dense scrub which surround it.’

They comprise a succession of falls, rapids, and cataracts varying from 10 feet to 60 feet, making a total of 250 feet from the fall to the bed of the stream. An original, rare photograph from the series 'Views of Victoria: General Series' by the photographer, Nicholas Caire (1837-1918). The 60 photographs that comprise the series were issued c. 1876 and reinforced a neo-Romantic view of the Australian landscape to which a growing nationalist movement would respond. Nicholas Caire was active as a photographer in Australia from 1858 until his death in 1918. His vision of the Australian bush and pioneer life had a counterpart in the works of Henry Lawson and other nationalist poets, authors and painters.

On Reverse: ‘For a distance of several miles this river runs its course over a granite bed, and is interrupted frequently by immense Boulders, which causes the stream to be broken up into rivulets, pools, rapids, falls, cataracts, &c. Many of these massive blocks of granite weigh from 40 to 50 tons. In the mid-distance of the present illustration, several of these great blocks can be seen obstructing the river in its course.’

Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. On Reverse: ‘Loutitt Bay is fast becoming one of the most fashionable Watering-places in Victoria, partly from its easy access by Rail, combined with the magnificent scenery to be found in the Cape Otway Ranges, and the very moderate charges of the houses of accommodation. The large house near the foreground is that of Mr. Mountjoy, which is a Restaurant. Duncan’s Hotel can be seen in the distance, on the brow of the hill.’

On Reverse: ‘The Cumberland Creek is so named from the close resemblance it bears to the place bearing that name in the mother country. The present illustration represents the precipices and hills which surround the Cumberland Creek. The soil around the hills is mostly sandstone rubble, hence the only vegetation identical with the spot is the inevitable sword grass and salt scrub, which frequently exist where no other vegetation can be found.’
