Ferret racing has been an integral part of the Harcourt Applefest since 1992. The ferrets depicted had been kept to assist with rabbiting in the orchards and paddocks of the rocky country around Harcourt and Mount Alexander
The photograph is significant as a reminder of the pets and hobbies of rural children and the typical entertainment of a country festival
