In the photograph Spiros Kallinikos on one of his many return visits to Ithaca. He is mending his fishing nets.
Like most of the Greek islands, in the past many Ithacan men were fishermen. Fishing has become a contentious issue in the Mediterranean region and the Ionian Sea and there are ongoing initiatives to preserve ecosystems and biodiversity in the western Mediterranean.
