The photograph is of the entrance to the Monastery of Panagia Kathariotissa which is situated the south eastern peak of the Homeric Mount Neritos at an altitude of approx 600. The bell tower offers the most commanding panoramic view of the island.

Significance

Panagia Kathariotissa is the protector saint of Ithaca and every year on 8th September Ithacans from across the island as well as visitors from elsewhere observe the feast day of the monastery. The night before a traditional feast is held in the courtyard, followed the next day, by the litany of the miraculous icon.
