A fid is a conical tool traditionally made of wood or bone. It is used to work with rope and canvas.

Significance

Fids where traditionally used for working with rope and/or sails on sailing ships. They are still in use today for working with rope.

Physical description

Large timber fid with a metal ring attached to wide end for strength used for splicing rope or cable.
