Depicted in the photograph is mining machinery at Wallaby Mine, Hurdle Flat in Stanley, Victoria. The Wallaby Mine overlooks the Nine Mile Creek roughly eight kilometers from Beechworth. At the Wallaby Mine remains a twelve head stamp battery that was built in 1912 replacing the previous battery that was destroyed by bushfires. The stamp battery was used to extract gold by crushing rocks, a common method used in the late 1800s until the early 1900s.

Gold mining heavily contributed to the development of Victoria since 1851, especially as a source of wealth in the 1800s.

Significance

This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the mining industry around Beechworth in the 1920s including the development of mining technologies and the technological history of gold mining in Victoria.
