Artists statement

Nico Van Dalen was born 1932 in Nijmegen, Netherlands, he migrated to Australia in 1955. On arrival, he stayed in the Bonegilla Migrant Centre. In 1997, he produced 15 cartoon-style drawings of life as an early migrant in Australia.

He worked as a designer in various positions until 1960 when he was offered a teaching job in the arts. He worked as a lecturer at the Gordon Institute of Technology and Deakin University.

Van Dalen retired in 1988 to return to full-time painting from his home in Daylesford, Victoria. His work is represented in many private and institutional collections.
