The Stinson L - 5 Sentinel was a World War 11- era liaison aircraft used by the United States Army Air Forces, U.S Army Ground Forces, U>S Marine Corps and the British Royal Air Force. It was produced by the Stinson Division of the Vultee Aircraft Company (Consolidated - Vultee from mid- 1943). Capable of operating from short unimproved airstrips the L - 5 Sentinel delivered personnel, intelligence, and supplies to the front line. On return flights it carried wounded soldiers who were evacuated to rear area field hospitals for treatment. The L - 5 carried a pilot and observer. It had a length of 24.1 feet, wingspan of 34 feet, It had a maximum speed of 130 mph, a cruise speed of 100 mph with a range of 375 miles.
The L - 5 was a significant asset to the allied war effort.

Historical importance.

1 x Churchmans No 1 cigarette tin. 1 x Capstan Navy Cut Cigarette tin. 1 x Players Navy Cut Cigarette tin. Inscription on each lid with opening instructions. " To open the tin remove lid and press vcut until point is directly downwards. Replace lid. Press slightly and turn.
Very historical significance. Robert was part of a group of 500 Servicemen captured as P.O.Ws.at Padang Sumatra. The POWs were accommodated in 6 long barracks buildings that ran side by side. They were behind an 8 foot high wall containing a parade ground, sports ground, Japanese Officers and guards quarters. The POWs were put to work on the infamous Sumatra Railway. Service Medals for Robert are The Pacific Star, 1939 - 45 Star, 1939 - 1945 War Medal and 1939 - 1945 Service Medal. Service Medals for Betty are 1939 - 1945 War Medal and 1939 - 1945 Service Medal.
Engraved metal nameplates with names and Service numbers at top and bottom.
Full uniform in Desert camouflage. Has bandolier containing torch, spare ammunition magazines, water flask. Full backpack is included.

Significant Historical. The Australian Light Horse was a skilled formation of mounted infantry of the Australian Imperial Force. (A.I.F.) The men fought at Gallipoli (without their horse's) and mostly served in Egypt and the Middle East. The unit contributed to the Allied victory against the Ottoman Empire in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign.
This uniform belonged to Sergeant Victor Royston Smith #1004. 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment 1st A.I.F. Sailed from Sydney 21st January 1915. Landed Gallipoli 1st October 1915. Rode with his Regiment in the charge at Beersheba in Palestine on 31st October 1917. Returned to Australia on the 2nd August 1919.

Metal D shaped device with one side hinged. The end opposite the hinge fits into a bracket with two holes used to fit a padlock.
The 40 mm Bofors Mk4 cartridge is used in a variety of modern armoured fighting vehicles and ships. This cartridge has been used by the Royal Australian Navy as a ship armament since the Second World War. It is also compatible with the ground mounted Bofors L60 Anti aircraft guns which were used by the Australian Army since the Second World War.

Japanese sword and scabbard. Sword hilt has what appears to be an ivory inlay then is wrapped in cotton? twine. It also has brass decorations on each end of the hilt and a brass guard. The scabbard is made of metal with a brass tip, brass decoration on the mouth and brass carrying ring.

The Number 1 Training School (No 1 F.T.S ) was formed in 1921 to train pilots. After training 3000 pilots the school was disbanded in 1944.
