Overshoes of this type were used by women to protect their shoes in wet or muddy conditions. Ansell (The Australian Rubber Company) was originally based in Richmond and specialised in household, consumer, and protective rubber goods. During the mid 20th century, compact, fold-up Vinland leather overshoes became popular.
