Historical information

The photograph shows Sylvia Mitchell (No. 42) and Tom Young (17) standing by the doorstep of a single trucker tramcar. Note no lining on the tram, door opening mechanism, uniforms, conductors bag, and badge numbers 17 and 41 respectively. See item 3600 for another photograph in good condition. On the rear of the photo is written Sylvia Mitchell (conductress) and Alf Mercer (driver). The cap number 17 aligns with Tom Young - see item 2980.

Significance

Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways in the the mid 1940's when Conductresses were employed during the war. Yields information about the tramcars, uniforms etc. The Conductresses was the winner of the Most Popular Conductress in 1944.
