Built on the site of the original Government Camp site in 1863, the Sandhurst Prison held both male and female prisoners. It was renamed the Bendigo Prison in 1972 as a medium security prison for male inmates. It closed in 2004 and was redeveloped as an arts and performance precinct named "Ulumbarra" (meeting place) 2015.
