Originally on the site of the Government Camp, the Sandhurst prison was built in 1863, when it housed both male and female prisoners. In 1972 it was renamed the Bendigo Prison, a medium security prison for male inmates. It closed in 2004 and was redeveloped as an arts and performance precinct named "Ulumbarra" (meeting place.
