Core samples are cylindrical sections of a naturally-occurring substance, such as sediment or rock, that are obtained by drilling with a special drill and brought to the surface for examination. Core samples are used in underground or undersea exploration and prospecting. . The hole made for the core sample is called the "core hole"1.
