Historical information
Grey felt hats were issued as part of the formal uniform of Australian Army nurses and were worn with a grey belted dress and black laced-up leather shoes. On the ward, nurses wore a starched white veil/head dress, and nylon stockings. This was soon found to be impractical and, a jungle green cotton peaked cap with a soft crown was worn when the work uniform became green cotton jungle fatigues. They were easier to launder and much better suited to the harsh climate.
