For this second edition the story has been extended to 1980. Three new chapters have been added describing the end of the war, including the decline of American involvement in the conflict and the Great Spring Offensive of 1975; the reunification of North and South and the beginning of reconstruction after the devastation; and the Socialist Republic's worsening relations with Kampuchea and China, which resulted in new wars.
