Historical information

"Showboat" was based on a novel by the same name and follows the lives of the crew and performers on the "Cotton Blossom", a Mississippi River showboat from 1887-1927. The music was written by Jerome Kern and the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was first produced by Ziegfield in 1927. It was considered the first of the new genre of Light Opera as opposed to operettas or musical comedies.
