Functional object - Run Number Plate - E9, 1930/31
Based on the attached note "Experimental run number plate used by MMTB 1930/31 to decide if white on black or black on white should be used". Such plates are used by depots to indicate to Inspectors and other staff the allocated run or timetable trip for a particular service.
Based on the note, used as a development item to be used on trams.
Run Number steel sheet with corners trimmed and rounded, two holes for hanging, with an off-white background and the letter "E" and number "9" painted in black. Has a part of a tag with notes wire to the item.

Photograph - Scrubber tram 10, Jim Seletto, Feb. 1962
The photograph shows Scrubber tram No. 10 in Swanston St with the Foys department store in the background. The tram was later renumbered to 10W. Has W2 class tram No. 500 behind. This tram began its life in Sydney in 1908, converted in 1952 to a scrubber, and sold to MMTB in 1959. The tram is now at the Bylands TMSV site. Photo by Jim Seletto Feb. 62.

Memorabilia - Sample of worn cable tram rope
Section of worn cable tram wire rope. One of the two ferrules has been engraved with "243 Weeks 341591 Miles" and the other "ANTD 12 Weeks" - "ANTD" is thought to be an abbreviation for anticipated. On this basis, the cable rope lasted 20 times its expected life!
Demonstrates a worn cable tram wire rope that has been sampled and its use recorded.
Section of worn Melbourne cable tram wire rope with engraved retaining brass ferrules on each end consisting of seven wound (12 wires) around a central fibre core.

Functional object - Tram stop sign number - set of 2, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1960s?
Used by the MMTB to number each tram stop on the system. Was attached to a pole using a metal strap. See item 185 for an example with a strap.
Demonstrates a MMTB tram stop number of two types of materials.
Set of two numerals used on tram stops, both with two holes on the sides, and originally a red number on a white background. No. 3 - sheet metal baked enamalled. No. 7 - white core bakelite sheet.

Functional object - Digital Memory module, KDM, "97100183", c1995
These items were used by tram and bus drivers as part of the Metcard machine management system. The PM (portable memory) key was issued to each driver. At the start of a shift, the driver would put it into a cream-coloured terminal at the sign-on point (starter's office in the depot) and transfer their shift information onto the key. Once the driver reached the vehicle, they put the key into the black-coloured terminal (tram driver's keypad - TDKP or bus driver's keypad) to upload the shift data to the vehicle. See item 2582 for more details and other examples.
Demonstrates an item used on buses and trams for management of the Metcard Machines and ticketting issue.
Digital Memory module, or Portable Memory Key, equivalent in type to a USB stick, black plastic with a sliding mechanism to protect 8 copper contact strips with a digital memory area at one end. Stamped into the memory area part number "97100188. On the reverse side is a lable giving details of the owner, part number, and serial number and that it is subject to a charge in favour of the National Australia Bank. Has as key type appearance. Has a key retaining ring and key tag with "194 Williams 361798" printed on it.

Tool - Name stamp or punch - "RICHMOND", W Willis & Co
Manufactured tool for use by one of the Melbourne cable tram operators, most likely the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co, to stamp leather satchels and other items that had to be marked. See item 7677 for a "CABLE" stamp. Was extensively used given the deformation at the top of the punch.

Functional object - Ticket punch
Used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Placed lear shaped hole in the ticket. Based on the stamped number, used from South Melbourne Depot. This type of punch was phased out by the 1990s when conductors were removed from trams.
Demonstrates an item used by the MMTB to cancel tickets. Would have been issued to a conductor at South Melbourne Depot.
