Historical information
The word Demijohn is believed to be from the French "dame-jeanne" meaning Lady Jane. It originally referred to a glass or pottery container for fluids that has a wide body, a narrow neck and a small handle afixed at the neck. It was usually encased in a wicker basket and may also have been used for direct brewing.
