Historical information

This backpack was manufactured in the 1960s. It was typical of backpacks used to carry in packages, small boxes and supplies by early residents of Falls Creek before any oversnow transport was available. The pack may have belonged to Julian Newton Brown as it was found outside the old Falls Creek Flats, commonly referred to as Alcatraz, where he lived for some time. The Flats were built in 1961 and quickly earned the name Alcatraz as they were only 2½ squares each so were compared to prison cells in Alcatraz. The name stuck and was later officially adopted.
