Historical information

Official Imperial Measures

Official brass measures used by the former Shire of Tambo for checking retail sales of fluids of all kinds – from kerosene to rum. Marks checking the accuracy of the measures can be seen on the base of the containers, marking each year of use.

The measures were manufactured in 1863 by Potters of The Poultry, London and used by local council officers until 1915.

Although no longer used, the measures, complete with glass lids, remained intact in their original wooden carrying case at the old Shire Offices in Bruthen for almost eighty years before being ‘rediscovered’ and donated to the Lakes Entrance Regional Historical Society in 1994
