Historical information
The Miners License was first issued Sept. 1851. It cost 30/- per month regardless of whether gold was found or not. Enforcement by troopers was extremely harsh. Miners protested against this license, initially peacefully but eventually this dissatisfaction resulted in the Eureka Stockade uprising in 1854, following which the License was abandoned in favor of the Miner's Right.
