Diggers and miners. At the outset, we must be clear as to what diggings was. A gold diggings was. A gold diggings was not a gold mine, or a group of gold mines, and the digger was not a miner as we know him - though, right from the beginning of the rush, the words ''mines'' and ''miners'' were used to describe ''diggings'' and ''diggers''.
