Diggers & Mining. Diggers and Miners. In 1887 a fire destroyed most of the main part of the town and four years later a disastrous flood caused much damage. One of the buildings destroyed was the Mechanic's institute, which housed a free library. Markings: 48 994.5 WAL. Used as a teaching aid.

Joseph Anderson Panton migrated to Sydney in 1851 and went to the Port Phillip District. After farming briefly at Mangalore, he tried for gold without success at Mount Alexander. In 1852 Panton was appointed assistant commissioner at Kangaroo Gully, near Bendigo, senior assistant commissioner at Bendigo in 1853 and senior commissioner in 1854.
