Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Specimen cottage: stonemason James Brierly built the stone cottage in Hargreaves Street in 1856 as a specimen of his craft, hence the name. Permission to erect a balcony was granted in 1861. Such cantilever balconies were once a common feature in Bendigo architecture. The cottage was at one time a brothel. The clip is in a folder.
