Historical information

A large wooden barn known as the 'Exchange Restaurant' that also operated as dance hall was opened by J. Carncross on 22 December 1852. On January 19 1854, the Exchange Hotel (as Shamrock Hotel was then known ) was granted a license to sell alcohol for seven during the first Bendigo land sales on the condition that his premises were used for the said sale.
