Historical information

Carl Mueller was a native of Folhr, Schleswig and as a boy of fifteen years, he 'went to sea' visiting ports such as London, Hamburg and New York. He arrived in Melbourne in 1853 after a voyage of 13 months at sea. He arrived in the Bendigo goldfield in 1855. He then went to the Avoca rush, Maryborough, Dunolly, then back to Bendigo by 1857. He travelled widely in search of gold. He was a long time member of the Bendigo Art Gallery, acting as Treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Bendigo Stock Exchange and a Director of the Sandhurst Mutual Permanent Land and Building Society for 32 years.

Physical description

Large, framed painting. Frame gold, painting depicts sailing ship in rough seas, headland on RH side of painting. Painting by Carl Mueller and donated by his great, great grandson Peter Jackson. Family believes it to be a copy of similar painting in Victorian Government House, Melbourne. (to be verified).
