Celebrating 60 years of Bendigo Sports Star Awards ⭐️
1970 - Cricket legend Simon O'Donnell and cycling star Bernie Landy.
Bernie was the monthly Sports Star winner in June 1970 for cycling, and then went on to win the monthly award in June 1986 for rifle shooting!
He started racing in 1935 at 14 years of age and won races around carnivals in Victoria then the war came along and he went into the army.
Bernie Landy was 51 years when he won the Charmers Watt Memorial Road 54 mile race at Craigieburn in 1969.
Bernard Joseph Michael Lawrence Landy was born in Long Gully, Bendigo, on the 11th March, 1919. He died on the 6th August 2002, at the age of 83, and is buried in the Bendigo Cemetery, in Quick Lawn Section 2/Row 0/A.
