Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Hot bread: Excelsior Bakery, California Gully, circa 1900. The bakery was established by W.H. Reed in 1890 to supply bread to residents of Eaglehawk and Bendigo. The bread was so popular Mr. Reed extended the bakehouse and opened another store. In 1901 he was employing 17 people.
