The gentleman in the photograph is John Black, who with his brother Andrew arrived in Australia from the Greek island of Ithaca some time between 1927 - 28. On arriving in Australia, John was a fruit stall holder at the Camberwell Market.

Significance

Many Ithacan who arrived in Australia during the first half of the twentieth century established their own food retail businesses in Melbourne's markets, Melbourn's CBD or surrounding suburbs.
