Container, Match Container, World War, 1914-1918

Historical information

This type of match container was issued to soldiers in World War 1, to carry phosphorous matches safely. These matches could ignite by being rubbed together and often did so when carried in bags or pockets. This one was the property of a member of Linton's Jennings family.

Physical description

Cylindrical brass container with lid, bottom hatched. Lid engraved or stamped "W. JENNINGS.".
