Samuel Steele, who lived in Linton during the 1860s and built the draper's shop in Sussex Street known as Criterion House, brought this painting with him when he migrated to Victoria.

Scan of a photograph of an original oil painting. The painting is a head and shoulders portrait of a young man with dark hair and eyes, who is wearing a dark jacket and white shirt which has three buttons and a stiff collar. His left hand resting on the arm of a chair, or a table.
