Official histories credit one James Esmond as being the first to discover gold in Victoria at Clunes on July 1, 1851.
A letter from the Secretary of the Mines Department to the Clunes Town Clerk dated May 26, 1950, said the records showed Bruhn was the first to discover gold and had been offered a small reward.
