Functional object - 19th Century writing instrument

This item was in a cabin trunk that belonged to Henry Frencham which also included his Petition to Parliament and the findings from the Parliamentary enquiry into his and other claims to be the first to find gold at Bendigo.

Physical description

Two light brown wooden frames joined together by two hinges. One piece is an open frame with 14 rows of string. The other frame has a solid backing. It was used before lined paper was invented. The horizontal strings across the frame helped guide writing in a straight line.
