Summary
This article describes the origin and early development of the public school system in Victoria. The period covered is from the late 1840s until the early 1870s when major reform of the education system took place in Victoria. The Bacchus Marsh Primary School, (School No. 28) has been identified by the author of this article as the first government public school to open in Victoria. This event has been officially recognized by the Department of Education. The school commencement date is recognized as the 13 May 1850. The substance of this article is about the early development of the public school system in Victoria overall. Because the Bacchus Marsh school is such an early one its origin is described in some detail on pages 53-55 of the article.
