Portrait of Lou Richards (1923-2017), former player and captain of the Collingwood football team, sports journalist and commentator, and later, hotel manager. During his decades long career, Richards’ widespread popularity as a Melbourne personality saw him being made Moomba Court Jester to Johnny Farnham’s King of Moomba in 1972, followed by being crowned the King of Moomba himself in 1981. In 1981, he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to sport. Richards was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1996, the Collingwood Hall of Fame in the first intake in 2004, and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2008. He was awarded an Australian Sports Medal in 2000, a Centenary Medal in 2001, and an AFL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
