One person (partially obscured) is holding up a book titled, "The Arthritis Helpbook". On the table, there is another book with the same title and some printed paper materials. Three other people each have an open book on the table in front of them. In the background, there is a slide projector and some blue paperwork on a small table, with a projector screen affixed to the wall behind it. On a perpendicular wall, there is a whiteboard also affixed to the wall.

    Arthritis Self-Management Course 1999 - with Noel Smith

Historical information

Around 1998 to 1999, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) developed an Arthritis Self Management Course. Course leaders were trained to deliver the program, which utilised Kate Lorig and James F Fries' landmark self-help book, "The Arthritis Helpbook". This photo depicts course leader, Noel Smith, teaching the Arthritis Self Management Course to a small group of people in either late 1998 or early 1999. A similar photo appears on page 10 of the Vol 12 Issue 1, Autumn 1999 edition of the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria's quarterly magazine, Arthritis Update. In addition, a similar photo appears on page 16 of the 1999 Annual Report, accompanying a report titled, "Self Management program".
