Standard issue item as used by Australian servicemen during the conflict in Vietnam (1962 - 1972).
A metal and wood box used to carry ammunition. The box has metal handles on the top and has side latches. The corners are reinforces with metal and lid, this is designed to slide open (now disabled). At either end of the box are clasps to secure it.
