John Harris Gill was born in Cornwall, England. He migrated to South Australia in 1883, arriving in Bendigo in 1886. John Gill came to South Australia by the sailing ship Orama, after a voyage of 12 weeks in 1883. He arrived in Bendigo in 1886, where he worked as an engine driver. He worked as an engine driver at several of the leading mines and was Manager of the Unity Gold Mine. He lived in Long Gully. His funeral left his son's residence 'Penygausi' in Arm Street Long Gully. His son Mr. J.G. Gill was the Manager of the Unity Mine at the time.
