Historical information
Photograph shows at least four workmen (some in uniform) pushing a North Melbourne bound cable set, possibly up the slight incline away from Flinders Street. It is a copy from a selection of photographs that appeared in the Melbourne Herald, page 12 on 9 March 1923. The missing caption reads "STILL PUSHING! : A daily spectacle in Elizabeth Street -- the source of many a Sydney visitor's chuckle." The Herald often highlighted cable tram breakdowns that were an embarrassment to the city and an annoyance for passengers. A frequent cause was damage to the ageing cables and equipment.
