The H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens in Sunshine, Victoria, are Australia’s oldest surviving industrial gardens, established in 1909 by Hugh Victor McKay for his workers and the local community. They remain a heritage-listed public space today.
Established in1909 by H.V. McKay, founder of the Sunshine Harvester Works.
Design by the landscape gardener Mr. Horshall prepared the plans; Mr. S.G. Thompson was appointed curator for 18 years.
Purpose was to create as a place of rest and recreation for McKay’s employees and the wider Sunshine community, reflecting McKay’s social philosophy of worker welfare.
